10 Best Non Toxic, Clean Makeup Brands

Updated: Jul 4

Is your makeup causing you to breakout? Does your makeup cause allergic reactions to your skin? Or do you simply want to clean up what products you're using on your face? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I have the perfect product recommendations for you. Not only are they free from chemicals like phthalates, parabens, sulfates, and other harmful toxic ingredients, but they are effective and will still make you look beautiful and put together for your day, whether it be more casual, everyday look or fancy, going-out look.

Here are the 10 Best Non Toxic Makeup Brands:

Ilia

One of the most popular non toxic brands in 2023 and going into 2024 is Ilia. Their formulas are loaded with skincare actives to help protect your skin from the environment and nourish your skin. Their Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 is what they’re most well-known for. It’s non-comedogenic, so it doesn’t clog your pores, and it’s loaded with actives like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and squalane to hydrate your skin and smooth uneven skin texture. They also donate 1% of sales of the skin tint to aid in reforestation in the Amazon rainforest, which is an amazing cause.

Their Multi-sticks are also another great product, as you can utilize it for lips, cheeks, and even eye-shadow. The cream formula has a soft texture that melts right into the skin and gives a natural glowy finish. The convenience of the stick means you can apply directly on the skin, or use your fingers or a brush. With 9 different shades to choose from, it’s a great addition to your clean makeup routine.

Kosas

Founded in 2015, Kosas was made by and for people with sensitive skin. They personally adhere to the European ingredient standards and have banned over 2,700 ingredients, including phthalates, sulfates, parabens, talc, fragrance, BHA/BHT, and more. They pack their products with ingredients that benefit the skin as well, so you get a 2-for-1 deal.

Allure Beauty awarded their Air Brow Tinted Gel  and Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation SPF 25 the Best of Beauty awards in 2021 and 2022. Their brow gel contains 5% castor oil, a known ingredient that helps nourish and grow brows, which will overtime keep them looking fluffy and full. The pigments give a natural look and have a long staying-power, so you won’t have to worry about reapplying or having it flake off throughout the day. And their foundation contains peptides, squalane, caffeine, and more to hydrate and brighten your skin, in addition to having a natural medium coverage finish that won’t clog your pores. This lightweight formula comes in a glass bottle with a pump to make application easier than ever!

Well People

This brand uses organic, plant-based ingredients, is cruelty-free, is void of synthetics, sulfates, and 1,700 other toxic ingredients, and is EWG verified, so you know they have a high standard when it comes to clean, non toxic makeup products.

Their Bio Powder Foundation is a great choice for minimizing shine and providing a lighter coverage to your skin. This powder has great staying-power while not being too heavy on the skin, and it's small enough to put in your bag or purse for touch-ups on the go!

If you’re looking for a neutral-colored, moisturizing lip oil, the Daylily Petal shade of the Lush Lip Tinted Oil gives a sheer color to the lips while also nourishing them with shea butter and vegan lanolin. It’s not as sticky as lip gloss, but gives the same shiny effect, which is a win in my book!

Kjaer Weis

Certified-organic, cruelty-free, and gluten-free, Kjaer Weis uses the best-of-the-best ingredients to elevate your skin and beauty regimen. They also have reusable packaging made of paper and recycled metals, providing a more eco-friendly option and reducing the landfill impact.

Sometimes concealers and foundation need a little layer underneath to help look their best on the skin. The Beautiful Eye Balm is the perfect canvas to help prime the skin underneath by adding a moisturizing layer to the skin and improving the texture. The addition of rosehip seed oil and sweet almond oil help hydrate and brighten the appearance of dark circles. A little goes a LONG way with this product, so this will last you a long time.

If you like a dewier look to your makeup and having 3-in-1 products, their Cream Blush does exactly that. A light and buildable formula that adds a soft and natural touch of color is a great addition to your makeup arsenal. It also contains Gardenia Florida extract, which is an anti-aging agent and helps fight free radicals that can damage the skin. Use it on your cheeks, lips, and eyes for a natural, monochromatic look!

Jane Iredale

A well-trusted brand by professionals, like plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and estheticians, Jane Iredale provides clean, non toxic, non-comedogenic, and cruelty free formulas; the packaging is also reusable, refillable, and recyclable, which lowers the environmental impact!

Their PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation has a convenient compact that is refillable, so when you’re finished, you can repurchase your shade and snap it back into your compact. How cool is that? With 26 shades to choose from this semi-matte formula, you can achieve a more even skin tone without the cakey feeling that some powder foundations can have. Plus, it has SPF 20, so you can protect your skin from harmful UV rays and reapply easily throughout the day with the compact.

To take the look of your skin even further, add in their Smooth Affair Facial Primer as a base layer to your makeup routine. It’ll help minimize the look of your pores, and with the addition of apple extract and royal jelly, won’t dry out your skin either!

Beautycounter

Beautycounter takes safety to the extreme with their products. They follow the rules of “The Never List,” which bans over 2,800 toxic ingredients from their products. They also undergo testing for trace amounts of heavy metals, and look closely at each ingredient to see if they pose any risks towards developmental and reproductive toxicity, and carcinogenicity. As well as using recyclable materials, working to be net-zero in carbon emissions, and being Leaping Bunny and EWG certified, there’s nothing more reassuring than using these non toxic products in your makeup or skincare routine.

With such great quality, however, comes a bigger price tag with this brand, but if you are willing to pay a little extra, it will be well worth it. One of their best selling products is their Skin Twin Featherweight Foundation. The formulation contains hyaluronic acid and jojoba, which are commonly used to attract moisture into the skin. They conducted a clinical study with 32 participants, and the results were impressive: 97% said their skin looked smoother immediately, and after 2 weeks of usage that percentage increased to 100%. Other highlights included more even-toned, glowy, and plumper skin; these sound like great features to me!

Tower 28

The founder of Tower 28 was inspired through her own struggles with eczema and not being able to find clean products that wouldn’t irritate her skin. She was motivated to create a brand that was clean, effective, geared towards sensitive skin-types, and most of all FUN! Their products also undergo third party testing for irritants and preservatives, are certified clean at Sephora and Credo, and follow National Eczema Association Guidelines.

Their MakeWaves Mascara and SOS Rescue Spray have become quite popular in recent years. The mascara was an Allure Best of Beauty 2022 winner. At a more affordable price point of $20, their formula is buildable and has minimal flaking and clumping. The lightweight formula helps create more length in your lashes, while also keeping it a more natural look.

The SOS Rescue Spray has been all the rage lately if you’re on TikTok! This toner is great to use after cleansing your skin, setting your makeup, or for a post-workout refresh. The hypochlorous acid helps reduce redness and irritation, and is amazing for acne-prone skin and preventing breakouts.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a light-coverage foundation, their SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen is highly rated with 4.3 stars. It’s a mineral-based sunscreen that uses non-nano zinc oxide to protect from UVA and UVB rays, and it’s also non-comedogenic and accepted by the National Eczema Association, so it’s great for sensitive skin types.

RMS Beauty

Founded by Rose-Marie Swift in 2009, this brand has had a high standard for non toxic makeup for a long time. RMS was inspired by her own skin irritations and health issues caused by chemicals that were found in her makeup; her brand contains no GMOs, parabens, phthalates, and sulfates and has banned a total of 2,700 ingredients in her products. There is even an ingredient glossary on her website that goes into detail about what each ingredient is and how they are used in each product, which is a great way to know exactly what you are putting on your body.

If you’re in the market for contouring products, RMS beauty is a great place to look. Starting with their UnCoverup concealer, it has a natural finish and is a medium to full coverage, while still being lightweight on the skin. Customers love that it isn’t cakey, doesn’t dry out their skin, and blends with ease. It helps brighten the skin for areas you want to highlight, and it covers up dark circles nicely.

Next up, their Buriti bronzer helps give dimension to your face, while giving your skin a healthy glow. This cream formula hydrates your skin while giving you a natural sun-kissed look, without making you look too orange. You can apply with your fingertips or brush, but the warmth of your fingertips can help application go more smoothly. The only con is that there is only one shade, so it might be better for lighter skin tones for contouring purposes, though darker skin tones can also benefit from the glowy finish.

Last but not least, the ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush combines both the pop of color you want from blush with the glowiness of a highlighter, making it a great 2-in-1 product to add to your arsenal. This product has a unique ‘Gel2Powder’ Technology that gives it a lightweight texture and helps it adhere to the skin better.

Saie Beauty

Saie Beauty is big on the clean beauty and eco-conscious game. They undergo 3rd party testing to ensure their products are clean and contain no toxic contaminants. In addition, they are Climate neutral and Leaping Bunny certified, and a part of the Carbon Neutral Club. They even offer a recycling program where once you have 5 empty containers, you can fill out a form and they will send you a shipping label so you can send the containers back to them. It’s always refreshing to see recycling efforts be such a big part of a brand.

Some of their best-sellers include their Glowy Super Gel and their Slip Tint. The Glowy Super Gel is an amazing addition to your makeup routine and is extremely versatile, as you can wear it alone, under makeup for a natural glow, or over makeup to highlight the highpoints of your face. It contains vitamin C and rosehip seed oil to brighten skin appearance and moisturize the skin.

The Slip Tint pairs nicely with the Glowy Super Gel. This lightweight tinted moisturizer contains zinc oxide as well, so you’ll protect your face from those harmful UV rays from sun damage with SPF 35. This dewy skin tint was also an Allure Best of Beauty winner in 2021, and has the addition of hyaluronic acid, licorice root extract, and pansy flower for hydration, antioxidant protection and a brightening effect for the skin. A con to this product, however, is that it has only has 14 shades, so it might be harder for some to find the right match for their skin tone.

Juice Beauty

Last but not least, Juice Beauty is another non toxic makeup brand inspired by a personal story, with the founder struggling with a rare blood disorder in her childhood. She also got pregnant in her 40s and wanted to make cleaner beauty products that would not only be safe for her skin, but safe for pregnancy as well. She worked with a team of microbiologists and chemists for over 5 years to create her brand, and infused her products with organic botanical juices instead of petroleum bases, to give the skin the best ingredients and nutrients it deserves.

The Stem Cellular CC Cream is a best seller for Juice Beauty, giving a natural glow without any artificial dyes or fragrances to worry about. It also contains zinc oxide for broad-spectrum sun protection, and it’s reef friendly as well! With this product, however, it may be harder to find a shade match, as it only contains 7 shades.

Another popular product from them is their Phyto-pigments Last Looks Cream Blush. The creamy formula gives the skin a natural, dewy finish and blends effortlessly into the skin. It can even be used on your eyes and lips in a pinch if you want to add a pop of color to your overall look. It truly is a versatile product!
