One of the first features that people notice in another person is their smile. Sometimes even when brushing and flossing the appropriate amount of times per day, yellowing still occurs with our teeth, which can be frustrating. Having white teeth isn't an indicator of healthy teeth, I might add, but it can definitely be an added confidence boost. Things like coffee and tea are high in tannins, which are culprits to staining one's teeth. Red wine, soda, soy sauce, berries, and other dark-pigmented drinks and foods can also play into the yellowing and staining of teeth. This doesn't mean you should cut them out completely, but be wary that some of these foods and drinks can alter the color of your teeth.
Other things to help combat yellowing would be to rinse your mouth out with water after consuming drinks that can stain. As well, you can use a straw with said drinks to help limit the amount of contact it'll have with your teeth. Eating fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots are also great because they almost 'brush' your teeth when you consume them and increase saliva production, which acts as a cleanser to your teeth and helps to limit stains.
If you're looking for a boost to your routine and want your teeth to shine without adding toxic chemicals to the mix, here's some of my recommendations for the best non toxic teeth whitening products!
Lumineux
One of the most popular non toxic whitening brands currently is Lumineux. Lumineux is certified non-toxic and doesn't use artificial dyes, flavorings, preservatives, SLS, alcohols, or fluoride in their products. Their whitening strips use coconut oil, sea salt, and lemon peel oil to naturally whiten your teeth without harmful chemicals, so they're great for sensitive teeth. It also comes with 21 treatments, which a great bang for your buck for the price point of $45; it comes out to just over $2 per treatment. The one complaint about this product is that when removing them, they can leave a sticky residue that you have to scrape off. This doesn't bother me much because it helps them stay in place and not slip off my teeth, which an issue I've had with other brands. If strips aren't your thing, they also have a whitening mouthwash and toothpaste (made with the same ingredients) that you can add to your routine.
Happy Tooth
Happy Tooth is another non toxic brand that is great for whitening your teeth. Their strips use hydroxyapatite, which helps to remineralize your teeth. As well, they are free from peroxides, alcohol, and are safe for your oral microbiome, as some whitening products are too harsh and wipe out the good bacteria in your mouth that prevent cavities. Happy Tooth is a safer option that will both whiten your teeth and keep them healthy. They have a toothpaste as well that you can add into your routine for double the benefits, and is safe for kids too!
Dr. Brite
In addition to hydroxyapatite, Dr. Brite's Whitening Mouthwash uses coconut activated charcoal to help whiten your teeth. Free from phthalates, parabens, sulfates, and non-GMO, this product is great to add to your existing oral routine. The coconut oil and aloe vera also prevent your mouth from drying out, and if you accidentally swallow some of it, it's perfectly safe. Not only does it whiten your teeth, but it both freshens and prevents bad breath from occurring!
Guru Nanda
If you want to take your oral health even further and still have whitening benefits, look no further than Guru Nanda Pulling Oil. Coconut oil is a known non toxic and holistic way to whiten teeth. You can use normal coconut oil you find at the store as well, but sometimes the texture of the solidified oil in your mouth isn't pleasant. This pulling oil already comes in liquid form, so it's very convenient and has a pleasant taste with the addition of peppermint oil. The one I like to use also includes tea tree, fennel, clove, cardamom, and spearmint essential oils, and vitamin D3, E, and K2, which are great for the health of your teeth and gums. You simply swish the oil in your mouth for about 5-10 minutes and you're good to go! Just make sure to spit it out in the trash or you'll risk clogging your pipes. Some packages also come with a tongue scraper, which is another habit I've enjoyed implementing to prevent bad breath.
Dr. Ginger's
If you like whitening pens instead of strips, Dr. Ginger's Coconut Oil Whitening Pen is a good option. It's free from sulfates, parabens, BPA, and is also non-GMO. The pen is very convenient for whitening and there's less mess with application; you simply brush it on your teeth and the gel will naturally dissolve on its own. However, you must let it sit on your teeth for an hour before eating or drinking, so you may need to plan ahead a little bit depending on the time of day you decide to whiten. The only complaint about this product is that the applicator may break, but the product itself is still effective.
