6 Best Non Toxic Shampoo Brands

Updated: Jul 4

Hair can be one of the biggest parts of our identity. People like to have specialized wash and styling routines to make sure their hair is healthy, feels good, and looks presentable; it's what makes us feel like ourselves. Keeping our hair in good shape is important, and what's even more important is using products that won't damage our hair and the rest of our body. Shampoos can be one of the biggest culprits to containing harmful ingredients, like sulfates, silicones, parabens, etc., all of which can have a big impact on our overall health. Using non toxic shampoos can improve the health of our hair and scalp, and mitigate any potential risks to our bodies.

I myself have fine, curly hair, and in the past it has been difficult to find products that work for my hair. I remember going to get my first curly haircut (curly girls know what I'm talking about) and the stylist recommended some products to me, and she used them to wash and style my hair and the results were amazing! They also just so happened to be organic and non toxic. Since then, I've loved implementing them into my routine and it also inspired me to look for more non toxic options for all budgets.

Here's the 6 best non toxic shampoo brands:

Innersense

The Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath is the very shampoo the stylist used on me, and it's especially great for curly hair or for thick or coarse hair-types. It's super hydrating and made with shea butter, tamanu oils, and sage to nourish and moisturize your hair and scalp. It's free from silicones, sulfates, parabens, and is cruelty-free. If you have a fine to medium hair-type, the Pure Harmony Hairbath is a great option for you. Both come in 10 oz bottles for $28, which can be a little pricey, but you can also buy 32-oz refills for a better price point.

Attitude

Another non toxic shampoo option is Attitude. Their Super Leaves Shampoo is EWG-verified, cruelty-free, vegan, and is free from parabens and phthalates. Their Nourishing Shampoo is their bestseller, and is good for dry and damaged hair. It contains ingredients like watercress, Indian cress, and grapeseed oil to strengthen and hydrate your hair. They have other scents and lines specific for your hair type and needs, as well. It's also budget friendly, as their 32-oz bottle is only $22, which makes it only $0.68/oz. They also have a 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash for your little ones that's gentle on their skin and scalp; it's available in 4 scents.

Everyone

Everyone Dreamy Shampoo is an amazing non toxic option for all hair types. It's free from sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances; it uses essential oils for the scents. As well, pomegranate seed and carrot seed oils help nourish and hydrate the hair, since they're rich in omega-3 fatty acids. And the addition of quinoa protein helps combat frizz! The only con to this shampoo is that it only comes in one scent, which is coconut lemon, but customers have expressed their satisfaction with it and how refreshing it is in the shower. It also has a decent price point of $11.49 for 12oz. Get it here!

Acure

One of the most budget-friendly options on this list is Acure. Their Ultra Hydrating Shampoo is a best seller everywhere and contains no harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, petroleum, and mineral oil. It's also vegan and cruelty-free. The argan and pumpkin seed oils boast the benefits from the omega-3 fatty acids, so your hair will feel soft and hydrated! At an impressive price of $8.54, you won't break the bank with this option. It's great for all hair types; if you don't end up liking it, at least you spent less than $10 and not $30+.

Evolvh

The Evolvh Ultrashine Shampoo is versatile non toxic shampoo option. It works for all hair types; it moisturizes dry and frizzy hair, softens thick, coarse, and curly hair-types, and helps give volume to those with fine hair. It's sulfate, silicone, paraben, phthalate, and propylene-glycol-free. The use of red grapeseed oil, seaweed extract, and soy amino acids help to strengthen and moisturize the hair and scalp, and leave a healthy shine. This shampoo is definitely on the pricier side, with the 8.5-oz bottle costing $30, but it can definitely be worth the investment as a little goes a long way with this product.

Max Green Alchemy

Max Green Alchemy is another one of my favorite brands that my stylist recommended. If you have dandruff or suffer from a dry scalp from time to time like I do, this Scalp Rescue Shampoo works wonders. It's smells amazing, as it uses lemon essential oil, and it's sulfate, silicone, and paraben-free. It gets a great lather, and you don't need to use much, so the bottle will last a long time. I like to pair this with the Scalp Rescue Conditioner as well. It comes in an 8.8-oz bottle and is $22.52; a bit on the pricier end, but I stand by this product; I will always reach for this in the winter months, so I think it's well worth the price. Try it here!
