8 Non Toxic Body Washes

Updated: Jul 4

Shower products are probably one of the first swaps one should make when considering non toxic products; this includes shampoos, conditioners, shaving products, body washes, etc. As well, skin is highly absorbent, and when our skin is exposed to higher temperatures, like a hot shower, it makes it even more permeable. Due to this, it makes it very easy for ingredients like parabens, phthalates, fragrances, sulfates, silicones, triclosan, etc. to cause harm to us (endocrine disruption, skin irritation, birth defects, fertility issues, antibiotic resistance, etc.) which it makes it all the more important to choose products free from these types of ingredients. See more ingredients you should look out for, not just in body washes, here. The intent of the following list is to recommend non toxic body washes and make it easier for you to make an informed choice and swap out your current products. Let's be our cleanest versions of ourselves!

Here's 8 best Non Toxic Body Washes:

Alaffia

Alaffia's body wash is free from just about any bad ingredient you can imagine. The addition of shea butter and coconut oil make it super nourishing and moisturizing on the skin. I love how budget-friendly it is! You get a big bottle for the price you pay (with a convenient pump), and it cleans my skin really well while not stripping my skin of its natural moisture. I am a big fan of Alaffia!

Best for: Dry skin, sensitive skin

Price: $15.79 for 32 oz

Scents: Unscented, Lavender, Vanilla Mint, Passion Fruit

Aleavia

The Enzymatic Body Cleanse by Aleavia contains minimal, easy-to-read ingredients (ranging from 7 to 9 ingredients) that are plant-based. The prebiotics in this formula help to maintain the natural pH of your skin and keep the skin's microbiome happy. It's free from fragrances, dyes, sulfates, silicones, etc. As someone who has sensitive and bumpy skin, the addition of this body wash to my shower routine has reaped great results; I've noticed less bumps on my skin and I haven't had a bad reaction to it, probably because there's only a few ingredients. I will be a repeat customer for sure!

Best for: Sensitive, Acne, Keratosis, Psoriasis, Eczema

Price: $23 for 16 oz

Scents: Unscented, Orchid, Lavender, Citrus, Green Tea Honeysuckle, Cranberry

Attitude

I'm a fan of Attitude's shampoos and conditioners, so it makes sense that their body wash works well for me. Their Super Leaves Body Wash includes Indian cress, water cress, and blueberry extract, which help nourish the skin and keep moisture within it. It's also EWG-verified so it's a win-win! I prefer to use their unscented body wash, as their other scents do contain fragrance and I try to avoid this ingredient, but they remain EWG-verified as well, so if you like scents, the EWG deems them safe. They also have a well-loved Baby Body Wash that comes in a fragrance-free version and 4 other scents that is great for sensitive baby skin. Both the adult and baby versions are budget-friendly.

Best for: All skin types - Combination, Dry, Normal, Sensitive

Price: $14 for 16 oz (also available in 32 and 64 oz bottles)

Scents: Unscented, Lemon, Red Vine, Olive, Orange, White Tea

Dr. Bronner's

Arguably one of my favorite non-toxic products is Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap. It can be used for just about anything, including body wash, shampoo, laundry, dishes, etc. I like using the Baby Unscented Castile Soap as my body wash. It's fragrance-free, organic, contains minimal ingredients, and it's a concentrate, so it will last you a very long time. It suds up nicely, though it does leave my skin a little dry, which doesn't bother me since I use lotion after a shower anyways. I love how cheap it is, how long it lasts, and just how versatile this product is! And with multiple size options, you can buy in bulk and save even more money. This product

Best for: Sensitive, Baby

Price: $9 for 8oz (also comes in 16 oz, 32 oz, 64 oz, and gallon sizes)

Scents: Unscented, Almond, Citrus, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, Rose, Tea Tree

This 3-in-1 soap from Everyone is a versatile product, as it can be used as a body wash, shampoo, and bubble bath. It utilizes coconut cleansers and plant-based ingredients, it's EWG-verified, and free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates, dyes, and triclosan. I haven't had much success with using it as a shampoo, but I like using it as a body wash. Their scents are lovely and use only essential oils, rather than fragrances that will affect your hormones. Plus, you can get 2 32-oz bottles for $21, so you get a lot of product!

This 2-in-1 Shampoo and Body Wash option from Honest is also EWG-verified, and it's great option for baby as well, as it's super gentle on the skin and contains no sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and dyes. It's also recognized by the National Eczema Association, so it's safe for those with eczema and sensitive skin types.
